Why sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Wink

Wink was founded with a clear vision: to create beautifully designed, custom-made bedheads and accessories that are as sustainable as they are stylish. Early in the development process, it became clear that traditional furniture-making methods, which are reliant on synthetic materials, toxic glues, and high-emission imports, posed serious environmental concerns.

Rather than follow the status quo, at Wink we set out to reimagine the way furniture could be made, placing sustainability at the core of every decision.
 

Sleeping better – for you and the planet

At Wink, we’ve swapped out synthetic materials like foam and tetron (which never break down) for a natural, renewable alternative: New Zealand wool. Our wool is grown locally, supports Kiwi farmers, and is fully biodegradable. It’s also hypoallergenic, non-toxic, odourless, and dust-mite resistant – making it as good for your health as it is for the environment.

We’re proud to be part of the Campaign for Wool, and even prouder that many of our customers feel as passionate about these choices as we do. No greenwashing here – just conscious design and honest materials.

Locally made, low impact

Being locally made in Aotearoa isn’t just a badge of pride – it’s a core part of our sustainability promise. By supporting NZ makers and sourcing NZ-grown timber, we significantly reduce our carbon footprint and strengthen our local economy.

Our timber is FSC-certified, responsibly harvested, and carries the Environmental Choice NZ Certification. Unlike conventional options, it’s low-emission and free from harmful solvents.

Every material matters

We scrutinise every detail - big and small. In addition to the largest components already mentioned of wool and FSC timber:

• We have chosen to primarily use screws and staples in our bedheads, and our glues are non-toxic and water-based.

• Our backing fabric is unbleached calico, free from chlorine-based bleach and all the pollution that comes with it.

• Our packaging is recyclable, biodegradable, and sealed with tape made from sustainable wood fibres.

• Even our lampshades avoid imported plastics – using card instead, just like the good old days.

• The feathers in our cushion inners are ethically sourced right here in NZ, as a by-product of responsible duck farming.

Sustainability is a journey

We don’t pretend to be perfect – but we’re committed to doing better, every single day. We’re always asking - can we make this more ethical, more local, more earth-friendly?
